Learning Q&A
Science is only taught in Primary 3, so is it too early to expose my preschooler to the subject?
It’s never too early. As most science involves a lot of observation of natural events, you might have already done so without realising it. Children love to ask questions about the interesting things they encounter in their environment, so all you need to do is be able to answer their questions adequately for their age level. Encourage your child to observe and ask questions about the world around him. Try not to give direct answers. Instead, pose questions that will stimulate him to figure out solutions. If you do not know the answers, show him how to learn by finding a person or a science book that can explain it.
My five-year-old used to speak good English before he started kindergarten. Now, he’s picked up a lot of Singlish. Should I be worried?
Children pick up different habits from peers and their environment all the time. Singlish, unfortunately, is one of the last bad habits parents wish to see, especially from a formal place of learning. But do not worry too much; your child might just be using it for fun or to feel the sense of belonging to his new environment for the time being. Guide him positively; explain and show him that using the language correctly is important. Continue to support him as much as possible at home, while communicating your concern to the school at the same time.
