Master Primary 1 English

Primary 1 exams may be a thing of the past in many schools, but your child still needs to build a solid foundation in English to succeed academically.

Elly Sim, founder and director of Jan & Elly, which offers English programmes, tells YP how you can help your child develop his speaking, comprehension and composition skills.

Many school programmes now include elocution and drama classes so pupils can learn to speak well – and speak up. But parents play a crucial part in improving their child’s fluency in spoken English too.

Number one on the hit list: cutting down on Singlish, which uses staccato rhythms and short sentences. In school, kids need to make complex sentences of varying lengths – in oral tests as well as in compositions.
