Web Exclusive : Valentines' Day On A Budget

Wuerstelstand is fine German hawker fare served without air-conditioning at delicious prices. Kick off your slippers, perch yourself on the bar stool and bite into the awesome flavours of an array of huge, fresh sausages, big hot buns and finger-licking good items on the day’s menu. Austrian Erich Sollboeck will pile on the sauces if you would like things to get a little messy!

Mouth Restaurant
How about Valentine’s Day with a difference? Tuck into slurpiliciously good Chinese food (think hot, handmade dim sum in addition to great Cantonese fare including pork ribs, Peking dumplings and double boiled soups) at suburban prices, in this ‘80s-like Chinese restaurant that’s been around for 19 years and counting. Feel free to bare your heart because hardly anyone will hear you above the teahouse din.
#02-01 Chinatown Point, tel: 6534-4233

Thai Noodle House
It’s no use having authentic Thai ingredients if you don’t respect age-old preparation methods, believe the Thai couple that owns this place. With a belief like that, you know the soups and curries win hands down. Also try the salads and lime juice at this air-conditioned haunt. Closed on Mondays.
#01-03 Coronation Arcade, tel: 6467-0104

Guan Hoe Soon Restaurant
If a restaurant served ayam buah keluak and sotong sambal to Japanese soldiers during WWII, you have to salute it as the oldest nonya restaurant in Singapore. The chefs still prepare and present the food very much like how it was in 1953, keeping the crowds coming back for favourites namely babi panggang, udang sambal and beef rendang priced from as little as $6 – enjoyed with air-conditioning!
