The facts about bubble tea

The “pearls” in bubble tea ought to be renamed bombs – calorie bombs.

Each pearl can contain between 3.6 and 14 calories. An average cup has 130 big pearls (we counted), so that chalks up to 1,820 calories! To put the number in perspective, a five-year-old boy needs only 1,500 calories a day, while a 10-year-old needs 1,900. Consuming pearls alone can fulfil your child’s caloric requirement for the day. Nehal Kamdar, senior dietician at Raffles Hospital, gives us the shocking numbers.
