Question: How can I protect my unborn baby and myself from the H1N1 virus?

Answer: It’s good that you’re thinking about extra precautions, because pregnant women are at high risk of flu-related complications from H1N1. While you could use a mask in crowded places, there is limited research to show that it’s effective in preventing the spread of this virus.

What’s better? Basic hygiene rules, like washing your hands frequently with soap or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, keep away from others with flu, and shun crowded places.

If you develop flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention immediately and stay at home as much as possible.
