Question: I’m into the third trimester and have difficulty sleeping at night. i have no appetite, too. What’s wrong?

Answer: During this period, your unborn baby is growing very quickly. The enlarged uterus pressing on the diaphragm may make breathing more difficult, and your big tummy also makes it difficult for you to lie down comfortably. To get a better night’s sleep, you can try these:

First, lie on your left to prevent your baby’s weight from pressing on the blood vessel that brings blood to your heart. Some mums-to-be find it more comfortable in a propped-up or reclining position. This will also help to relieve breathlessness, palpitations and stomach discomfort.

Also reduce the amount of fluids you consume in the hours before your bedtime (but make sure you drink plenty in the day). Take a toilet trip before you sleep and try to empty your bladder by leaning forward when you urinate.

Some also experience poor appetite, as there is simply less room for food. Avoid having spicy and heavy dinners as well as stimulants, such as caffeine and sugar, that prevent you from sleeping. If possible, try to eat small and frequent meals throughout the day to help ease the discomfort.

But, as with any pregnancy problems, if you do feel that sleep is becoming an issue, you should talk to your doctor.
