Question: What’s the right age for a child
to receive sweets and chocolates?

Answer: I’m not in favour of introducing candies to
babies below 12 months old.
Until then, they should be exposed only to natural tastes. Some root vegetables – like carrots, sweet potatoes and butternut squash – as well as fruits have naturally occurring sugars and are good alternatives.

After your baby turns one
year old, you can gradually
offer the occasional candy
treat, but be careful what you choose. Look at labels to check for hidden preservatives and other ingredients, which could
be harmful. A slice of bread with a spread of butter and Nutella is probably more nutritious than a store-bought chocolate biscuit. There are plenty of delicious snacks that aren’t loaded with sugar, such as yogurt and dried fruits.

If you must give your child sweets and chocolates, try to restrict it to once or twice a
week, and remember to brush her teeth afterwards.
