Question: When can I introduce water to Baby if he’s still breastfeeding?

Answer: A breastfed baby does not require any supplemental water for the first six months, until you start weaning. Breast milk has a high water content anyway, and breastfed babies rarely, if ever, get constipated. Filling your baby’s tummy with water will make him feel full and make him drink less milk. This could potentially compromise baby’s growth and nutrition since the water he consumes in place of breast milk has no calorie or nutrients.

A good time to introduce water to your little one would be after starting solid feeds, when you may wish to give him sips of water or diluted fruit juice.
