Question: Will wearing mittens delay Baby’s motor skills development?

Answer: Mittens are very useful in the first few days to weeks of life to prevent the baby from scratching his face. But you will eventually need to cut his nails – I actually find nibbling them with my teeth in the first few weeks the safest and easiest way to get this done – and then mittens are no longer necessary.

We live next to the equator, so our children are not going to catch a cold if they don’t wear mittens. As you rightly point out, playing with fingers is an important part of development and babies explore their surroundings in a very tactile way initially. Let him get on with the learning!
