Q: My four-year-old son has dark eye circles which look awful. He sleeps about nine hours at night and about two hours in the afternoon. Is there any way I can get rid of his dark circles?
A: It certainly sounds as if your four-year-old son is getting the required amount of sleep daily. It is therefore highly unlikely that a lack of sleep is the cause of the dark circles around your son’s eyes.
One of the most common reasons children have dark circles under their eyes is the congestion of the nose that is usually caused by conditions such as allergic rhinitis, recurrent colds or enlarged adenoids.
These dark circles tend to be more visible in children who have a fairer complexion. It is best that you get your son reviewed by a doctor to identify and treat the underlying cause of his condition. – Dr Wendy Sinnathamby, a paediatrician with Raffles Medical Group.
