Crazy over character cafes? Good news – now you don’t have to jet all the way to Japan to satisfy your craving for cuteness. Why? Because the adorable Pompompurin Cafe just opened right here in Singapore earlier today – and it doesn’t disappoint. Unfamiliar with this cutie? Check him out here.
Even the entrance catches the attention of anyone passing by. Check out the dainty wrought-iron gate and dainty topiaries. The design for each cafe around the world is tweaked to fit its city, so it’s fitting that the Singapore outlet has a garden city theme.
One step into the cafe and your head will be spinning. With so many cute details vying for your attention, you won’t know where to look – or what to take a picture of first. May we suggest the large statue of Pompurin and his cheerful friends sitting centre-stage of the cafe?
For such a small space – the entire cafe seats 78 pax at full capacity – it sure packs a punch. Even the different seating options present a tough choice. There are simple wooden tables under sun umbrellas, four little “tomodachi house” booths for a slightly more private dining atmosphere, and another section with plush Pompurin chairs.
Of course, there’s no leaving out the food when you’re talking about a character cafe. Though a bit on the pricey side (a drink, main and dessert can easily add up to $50) the portions are quite hearty and generous, so don’t rush into ordering too many items just because they’re too cute to resist. The POMPOMPURIN’s Mango Parfait ($19.99) can easily be shared by two, so consider splitting a dessert.
Be patient though, as the food may take a bit of time to prepare. Perhaps it has to do with the design and styling involved. We suggest browsing the menu and placing your order before you begin posing around the cafe for those insta-worthy selfies. By the way, see that little Pompurin sauce cup on the plate of pasta? You can take it home after you’ve finished your meal. The menu indicates which dishes come with the souvenir cup.
If the kids are with you, children’s dining sets are also available. The bowl is cute, yes, but we like the nice touch that the wooden utensils add, instead of the normal colourful plastic ones that are so common at other restaurants.
If you absolutely cannot leave without a souvenir, there’s also a small merchandise section up front by the cashier. Items for sale include mechanical pencils, mugs, water tumbler, plush toys, and more.
This is the sixth cafe in the world dedicated to the cheerful yellow golden retrieved from the Sanrio family, and the first in Southeast Asia. Other outlets can be found in Japan, Hongkong and Taiwan.
Visit the Pompompurin Cafe Singapore at #04-08, Orchard Central. It’s open daily from 11am to 10.30pm (last order at 10pm). Find it online at www.facebook.com/Pompompurincafesg.
