Coinciding with the mall renovations at White Sands, the Pasir Ris Public Library reopens after closing for nine-months to revamp. And the refreshed space is definitely one that has something for everyone in the family.
The Early Literacy Collection for the little ones from newborn to six years old features a full front-facing collection for children to browse pictures books by covers instead of by book spines.Low-level tables and chair scatter the floor, and they’re moveable, so the area can be rearranged to suit visitors’ needs, or cleared for storytelling session or other activities. It also has a cool magnetic wall that can be used in storytelling – librarians switch out the magnets on the wall occasionally to fit the display themes or special activities. There’s also a lowered crawl space for toddlers and a doodle wall to keep kids entertained.
A new upper floor is been added as a dedicated space for teens that is managed by volunteers aged 13 to 19 who are part of the Inspiring Readers Society. In this Teen Mezzanine, the volunteers curate and decorate displays with the help of librarians. There are movable chairs, floor cushions, and three cool hanging bubble chairs that overlook the children’s section downstairs. At the Enhanced Book Tree, they can find and create book recommendations, as well as watch book trailers – short promotional videos for books, created by librarians and the teens themselves. It also has an interactive projector and doodle wall for students to use for project discussions or brainstorming sessions.
Over in the audio visuals and comics corner, you’ll find one wall of comics and another of kids’ DVDs. A nice touch here is that shelves of kids’ videos go all the way down to the ground so little ones can help see and reach the items themselves. There’s also another hanging bubble chair as well as a quick charging tower if your electronics are in need of some juice.
Based on feedback from the community, the library has added a lot more reading space, including the sprawling Reading Terrace with staggered wooden decks and flat cushions that overlooks the Pasir Ris Park. For those who like a quieter reading nook, the Quiet Reading Lounge has bamboo forest-themed seats designed to wrap around readers, giving the illusion of privacy. The newspapers corner also has a large table with special grooves for elderly visitors to hang their umbrellas or walking sticks, as well as four e-newspaper reading stations with access to six newspaper titles.
The library is located on level four of White Sands. It’s open daily from 11am to 9pm except on public holidays. Visit www.nlb.gov.sg.
