Reading to a newborn? Experts agree that it’s never too early to start enjoying books with your little one because you’re introducing to him one of life’s essential skills.
“The ability to read plays a major role in building the foundation for learning and education. It opens the door to other skills like writing, vocabulary, grammar and spelling,” says Lynn Chua Wan Leng, children’s librarian at the National Library Board.
“Reading aloud to him will instil a love of reading. It also develops his imagination and enhances the bond between you.”
For his first three months, choose picture books with high-constrast colours, such as black, white and red.
These stimulate the visual cortex of the brain and help develop his vision, shares Dr Natalie Epton, a specialist paediatrician and neonatologist at the International Paediatric Clinic.
