It’s a baby girl for Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan and Taiwanese-Canadian actor Mark Chao.
Weibo was abuzz with excitement after a hospital staff in Beijing took to the microblogging platform to reveal that the actress had given birth on Tuesday (May 21).
The new dad confirmed the good news, writing in a Weibo post: “A beautiful day to welcome a beautiful life. Both mother and daughter are well. Thank you all.”
He was later spotted visiting his wife and newborn at the hospital and thanked the media that had gathered at the scene.
With the couple confirming the pregnancy in April, the arrival of their2 baby came as a surprise to many fans who were expecting the child to be born later in the year.
Mark, 34, and Yuanyuan, 39, tied the knot in 2014 after they met on the set of Chinese film Caught in the Web.
In the five years since, several fake reports had emerged about the actress conceiving.
Yuanyuan reportedly became the go-to celebrity to front advertising campaigns after top actress Fan Bingbing was mired in a tax-evasion scandal last year.
“Now, we can say: ‘Yes, thank you for the blessings that you’ve showered on us all this time.'”
During then, Apple Daily Taiwan quoted a source as saying that Yuanyuan was more than three months pregnant. The actress had reportedly cut down on her work projects to focus on the pregnancy.
Gao also shared the post on her social media accounts.
Even before the actor delivered the happy news, fans speculated that Yuanyuan was in the family way, after they noted her absences from two recent weddings and a rounder face.
She was also seen in a promotional video looking like she had gained weight.
A version of this article appeared in Asiaone and The Straits Times.
