Is it possible to have a natural delivery for a big baby? The doctor said your unborn child might hit 4kg at 37 weeks.
It’s fine to attempt a vaginal delivery – which is generally considered better for you and Baby – rather than through a Caesarean, says Dr Christopher Ng, a gynaecologist and obstetrician at GynaeMD Women’s & Rejuvenation Clinic.
Many studies have shown that the best way to determine if you can have a successful natural childbirth is to undergo a trial of labour.
Most women deliver after 12 hours or so in active labour, although there are variations depending on the patient and the obstetrician’s comfort level.
In cases of foetal distress, prolonged childbirth or failure to progress during the delivery, a C-section would then be warranted.
Sometimes your gynaecologist may recommend inducing labour so that you can deliver an average sized baby, rather than wait it out until your due date when your baby might be too large to fit through your pelvis.
