Should you really start your newborn on tummy time from Week 1? We ask Dr Natalie Epton, a specialist paediatrician and neonatologist.
You can indeed place her belly-side down soon after birth. This is recommended by both the American Academy of Paediatrics and the British guidelines.
Don’t worry if you aren’t feeling quite up to it in the first two weeks, Dr Epton says. It’s just that the earlier you start, the more comfortable your baby will be with it.
Just one or two minutes of this activity, a few times a day, will help her build head control and upper body strength.
Tummy time is an important precursor for many gross motor milestones, including rolling and crawling.
If she doesn’t enjoy it, try lying down on your belly with her. This way, she can see you, and you can sing and talk to her.
But remember that you must never leave your baby unattended on her tummy, Dr Epton reminds.
