The Brickz programme was designed to help children build proficiency in the language, as well as develop essential life skills, using Lego bricks and robotics.
Whether you want to encourage your child’s interest in Chinese or help him be more fluent in the language, the Brickz programme at Square Education Studio delivers impressive results. The first of its kind in Singapore, the programme uses Lego bricks and robotics, and incorporates the skills designated in the Ministry of Education (MOE) Chinese syllabus.
A “play-full” Chinese enrichment programme
Ideal for five- to nine-year-olds, this creative methodology develops your children holistically and inspires their interest in learning Chinese. The Brickz programme is designed to develop the four core language skills – listening, oral and communication, reading and comprehension, and writing; as well as various essential life skills, such as higher-order thinking, problem solving, logical thinking, collaboration, and social-emotional skills. It also improves a child’s ability to make connections between mathematical and scientific concepts.
And of course, the kids get to play with Lego – what could be more fun? In recent years, there’s been a push to allow children to learn through play. This has been found to help kids think outside of the box, encourage teamwork, improve focus, promote creativity and problem solving, build a sense of mastery and self-confidence, and reduce stress and promote socio-emotional development.
A unique way to learn Chinese
Brickz is the brainchild of a former MOE Chinese head of department and Mr Mao Guangming, a former Lego curriculum specialist in Beijing, who was involved in the translation of several Lego publications into Chinese.
Chloe Lim, principal of Square Education Studio, which runs the programme, says that it engages and sustains the interest of young learners and inspires their eagerness to learn Chinese.
The centre adopts a simple but effective philosophy towards education, which is to transform Chinese into a living language through a fun and positive learning environment. By engaging students using a familiar and interactive medium, the programme allows its learners to explore different topics and interests, and gain a deeper understanding of how the world works.
